Strategic Communications Team Leader - 100%

Role

As part of the Communications and Engagement (C&E) unit, the Strategic Communications Team Leader will drive ISO’s strategic and integrated approach to external communications, ensuring all communications and engagement activities achieve measurable impact and resonate with key audiences. Leading a multidisciplinary team of professionals and consultants, the role will focus on elevating the ISO brand, leveraging digital channels, and strengthening ISO’s position as the leading voice for International Standards. By developing cohesive, audience-focused communications strategies through close collaboration across ISO Central Secretariat and with key stakeholders, the role will directly advance ISO’s organisational priorities and strategic objectives.

Key responsibilities

Strategic communications

  • Lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of high-impact external-facing communications campaigns, ensuring integrated strategies across all channels (e.g. websites, social media, mass mailings) to maximize influence and engagement.
  • Develop high-level key messaging and themes, including those which contribute to the organization’s core communication collaterals (internal and external).
  • Use data-driven insights to assess campaign performance, coordinate reporting (including monthly social media and campaign reports), and refine strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Identify and leverage opportunities to enhance ISO’s visibility and recognition in its targeted spheres of influence.

Digital strategy

  • Develop and implement a multi‑year digital strategy and roadmap for iso.org and related digital platforms, aligned with organisational priorities and the C&E unit’s objectives.
  • Oversee the optimization and ongoing maintenance of ISO’s digital platforms, ensuring they are aligned with engagement objectives and business goals.
  • Oversee major digital projects (e.g., CMS migration, website revamp), coordinating with other units, vendors, and consultants.
  • Drive a cohesive end‑to‑end user journey across all web touchpoints, aligning design, content, and functionality with ISO’s brand and diverse audience needs.
  • Lead the creation and execution of digital content strategies, championing SEO best practices to enhance discoverability, audience engagement, and the overall digital presence of ISO.
  • Continuously evaluate platform performance and user experience, implementing data‑driven improvements that support the C&E unit’s purpose and objectives.

Brand & quality control

  • Safeguard and strengthen the ISO brand, ensuring all messaging is consistent, impactful, and aligned with ISO’s positioning as the leading voice for International Standards.
  • Oversee the correct application of the ISO brand across all assets and digital platforms, ensuring adherence to branding guidelines and the implementation of best practices to maintain a unified and professional online presence.

Team leadership & operational excellence

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team including experts in social media strategy, community management, digital campaigns, UX/UI design, graphic design, digital content, SEO/SEA, and web management.
  • Align team efforts with ISO’s strategic objectives, driving brand awareness, stakeholder engagement, and positioning within key sectors sectors through targeted and well-executed communications campaigns.
  • Support the cross-functional work of the Communications and Engagement unit, through a common methodology, set of processes and tools to drive and facilitate the successful delivery of campaigns.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that supports creativity and active contribution, enabling all team members to play a role in the success of strategic communications initiatives.
  • Promote a results-oriented approach by leveraging data-driven insights, metrics, and audience feedback to guide team development, optimise performance, and demonstrate the value of the team’s work in advancing ISO’s goals.

Cross-functional collaboration & stakeholder management

  • Work collaboratively across the ISO Central Secretariat to align strategic communications activities with organizational priorities and support overarching strategic goals.
  • Provide expert advice and recommendations on communications and engagement matters, influencing decision-making at senior level and fostering collaborative and mutually supportive relationships across units.
Report to: Head of Communications and Engagement

Qualification and Experience

  • Minimum of ten years’ experience in senior communications roles, with a proven track record leading high‑visibility, multi‑channel global campaigns.
  • University degree in communications, marketing, digital strategy, or a related field; postgraduate qualification a plus.
  • Proven experience managing large‑scale communications and/or digital projects, including complex, multi‑stakeholder initiatives.
  • Strong experience managing vendors, consultants, and cross‑functional teams in matrix environments; budget management experience is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience in developing and executing strategic communications plans that align with organizational goals and deliver measurable impact.
  • Strong knowledge of brand management and social media best practices.
  • Good understanding of SEO, SEA, UX/UI, and website management, and how they support communications objectives.
  • Experience communicating with multi‑layered, international audiences across diverse sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise, organise, and manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (C2); French is an asset.
